  • While there’s no shortage of things to explore in Cape Town, Hans’ centrally-located loft makes it perfectly acceptable to stay in. With terrace views of the harbor, Table Mountain and city center, you can take in the sights without leaving the comforts of his fireplace and industrial chic decor.

MICHAEL PHILLIPS

No man prefers to sleep two in a bed. In fact, you would a good deal rather not sleep with your own brother. I don’t know how it is, but people like to be private when they are sleeping. And when it comes to sleeping with an unknown stranger, in a strange inn, in a strange town, and that stranger a harpooneer, then your objections indefinitely multiply.

Nor was there any earthly reason why I as a sailor should sleep two in a bed, more than anybody else; for sailors no more sleep two in a bed at sea, than bachelor Kings do ashore. To be sure they all sleep together in one apartment, but you have your own hammock, and cover yourself with your own blanket, and sleep in your own skin.

RECENT FEEDBACK

For with the charts of all four oceans before him, Ahab was threading a maze of currents and eddies, with a view to the more certain accomplishment of that monomaniac thought of his soul.

The more I pondered over this harpooneer, the more I abominated the thought of sleeping with him. It was fair to presume that being a harpooneer, his linen or woollen, as the case might be, would not be of the tidiest.

  • The tranquil atmosphere of these glamping tents in Nanyuki is made even more relaxing by the lack of network connection. But you won’t be completely off the grid—Rob, your host, will be happy to point you in the direction of hikes in the Ngare Ndare forest, views over Samburu, horse riding and natural swimming pools. At night, don’t be alarmed if you can hear lions yawning in the meadow below.
  • Whether you choose to swim in the private pool, or walk two minutes to the secluded beaches of Bwejuu, Ricardo’s island villa is the perfect place for some uninterrupted relaxation. And if you want a chance of pace, the vibrant social scene in Paje is only a short drive away. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

  • The coastal village of Popenguine is best described as peaceful and relaxed, which is exactly how you’ll feel while basking on its rocky shores. It is also home to the Nature Reserve of Popenguine, where birdwatchers can catch a glimpse of turtle doves, rose-ringed parakeets and elusive bluebirds. The whole area is accessible on foot, but sometimes it’s nice to treat yourself to horse-drawn cart. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

  • Cape Coast is home to some of the best beaches in Ghana. Once you’ve had your fill gazing at the colorful fishing boats dotting the horizon, turn your attention inward to Kakum National Park. After a short drive north, you'll be rewarded with a canopy walk over suspension bridges and a bird’s eye view of the tropical forest. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
